Swim Starts

The parent/guardian is responsible for getting the athlete to the event with sufficient time to be ready for his/her swim start. Each athlete will be assigned a specific start time, based on his/her pre-assigned race number. Missing the start time will mean missing the event. The organizers will try to accommodate any unusual circumstances but there is no guarantee that such can be done. It is recommended to arrive at least 45 minutes prior to the assigned start time to allow enough time for the participant to pick up their bib number, attach the timing band, and have all items set in the transition area.  During the event, only participants and volunteers are allowed in the transition area.

Swim Aids

Swim aids such as kickboards or non-inflatable flotation devices will be allowed. Kickboards will be available at the pool. Inflatable flotation devices are not allowed in the Oregon community pool, and will not be allowed for use in this event. No performance enhancing devices such as fins will be allowed.

Bike Helmets

Bike helmets must be worn and buckled during the bike portion of the event. Helmets must comply with either CPSC, SNELL or ANSI standards.

Bikes

Parents are encouraged to check your athlete’s bike out before race day. There will be a bike shop on site to help out with minor last-minute problems, but it is a good idea to have the bike inspected before race day. Steering, brakes, tire pressure, chain, and pedals are all things that should be looked at by a bike mechanic before race day. Training wheels will be allowed.

Running

Parents should make sure that their athlete has proper foot attire for the race. All athletes will be required to wear shoes during the biking and running portion of the race. If your child does not know how to tie their shoes, they should be encouraged to use speed laces.
Parents are not allowed to pace their children during the race. The athletes have to run the course with the help of the volunteers to guide them through the race.

Health of Athletes

Parents should assure that their child is in good physical condition to compete in this race.

Non-finishers

Athletes not finishing the event will receive a participant’s medal. Non-finishers will have no posted times.

Disqualification

Athletes that finish the race but do not complete the total distance of the course (e.g., less than the required laps, short-cutting the course) will be disqualified. Unsportsmanlike conduct is also grounds for disqualification. Volunteers will be monitoring the course and transition area for infractions. Disqualified athletes will receive a participation medal but will be ineligible for podium awards (i.e., 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in age group) and will not have their times posted.

Age Limits

The upper age limit is 14 years old at the time of the event. The lower age limit is 5, but parents/guardians should assess the child’s abilities to complete the prescribed course. The Oregon Kids Triathlon is conducted to be a positive experience and no child should be entered that is not going to benefit from the experience. Being asked to perform beyond one’s abilities may not be a positive experience.

Relays

There are no relay teams. Only one athlete is permitted per race number.

Refunds

There will be no refunds for any reason.

Transition Area

No parents or guardians are permitted in the transition area. Volunteers will be present to assist the athletes and to restrict access. The transition team will help assist with all ages if needed. We ask that all athletes set up there transition area on Friday night to help with congestion on Saturday.

First Aid

Oregon EMS will be stationed by the pool for anyone needing medical attention. There are also volunteers that are on the course that have basic first aid packs with them. Two volunteers will be on the course with two-way radios and all-terrain carts to help athletes back to the first aid station if needed.

Rain or Shine

The race will continue rain or shine. In an event of a storm, the race will be delayed until it is safe for the athletes to compete. If there are strong storms the entire day of the race that threatens the athletes’ safety, the race will be canceled and there will not be any refunds.
